Bring Your Own Device in Schools

A topic of conversation that has become increasingly popular and that has been catching the eye of many is the topic of Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD. In simple terms, BYOD is allowing children to bring their own device to school for use such as, a smart phone, tablet, etc.

Many are in favor of this implementation; however, some are not. There are many pros and cons associated with this BYOD implementation. Some of the pros include:

  • Familiarity of their own devices. Students that have technology devices are already familiar with them and will know how to best use them instead of wasting their time using another device provided by the school.
  • Save schools some money. If students bring their own devices, then the schools will not have to spend costly amounts of money for technology.
  • Exciting opportunities in class. When students are excited about bringing their devices to class, then they will be more engaged and more willing to be involved with the lessons.
While these are just three pros out of the many, you can somewhat see why BYOD could be a major pro for schools.

I believe that BYOD could be a great thing for schools, if the schools would just give it a chance and allow it. Be sure to check out my blog for next week; it will discuss some of the cons of BYOD in schools.
